Surface
finishing, as a modern technology, first appeared at the middle
of the nineteenth century, following the second Industrial
Revolution, and was applied on a large scale with the arrival
of mass production. In Italy it developed especially in the
vast area in
the foothills of the mid-eastern Lombardy Alps. This territory
best represents what history and tradition refer to as "the
culture of
finishing" and the "practice of finishing":
witness to this are the ancient abilities of its people, already
known in Roman times, in
smoothing metals, closely linked to the history of the particularly
numerous quarries of abrasive stones in the valleys and the
traditions
of working stone and marble, activities which are thriving
still today.
If these territories may today be indicated as the cradle
of modern finishing, in any case it should be emphasised that
the success
encountered all over the world by those "made in Italy"
articles can be traced originally to the Italian artistic-artisan
manual skills as a
whole and can never be separated from the high levels of finishing
currently attained.
Starting from the Renaissance, over the centuries, a dynamic
and virtuous course of interchange has developed between art
and
the artisan's workshop and between these and the industrial
world.
We must always remember that the most modern technology (that
allows the production of a perfect object) wherever it is
not a direct
son of the art, it has in any case assimilated its essence
and remains its reliable ... descendant. |
